ABOUT WES WEAVER
I am a Philadelphia-based technologist with a background in public policy, data analysis, data communication, spatial analysis, remote sensing, and cartography.\"Data\" is often heralded as a kind of all-powerful tool to solve our deepest problems. In my experience, data are inherently neutral. History is full of bad algorithms and half-hearted attempts to patch over deep problems. Ultimately, data is best used to inform, predict, and evaluate along the way toward good public policy. Data can be used to identify unseen problems and blind spots, find paths toward policy goals, and help communicate important issues to stakeholders and to the public.I have a long history as an activist and organizer, primarily in labor and economic justice, and found a love for data science and communication along the way. I am passionate about helping to advance serious social change and making concrete improvements in people\'s lives. Throughout my career, I\'ve worked to use data as a piece of that extremely difficult puzzle.Data can also be fun! Throughout my profile, you will find examples of policy work, political work, environmental science, and some fun data visualizations as well. All of these pieces play an important part in our understanding of the windows into the world that data science opens for us.
