ABOUT EDWIN GRACELYN

I am very passionate about reviving unserved and underserved communities through education by using local assets and creating awareness. I want to be an agent and advocate for the principle that every human is respected and dignified. I want to address the root cause of injustice, disparity, and corruption by ensuring that everyone and every community has a fair opportunity to receive what they deserve. My background of growing up in an Ethiopian community that does not receive proper attention has given me the desire to tackle Public Health issues. My experiences have given me a passion to open people’s eyes that there are many communities like mine throughout Africa and around the globe that are recipients of injustice. What I like to do most in life is to help and make a difference for others. To do this, it is key to create and give opportunities that empower local communities. I am a living witness for this concept because I was given the right opportunity. I am the first of my extended family to graduate high school, college, and attend graduate school where I will be equipped and prepared for future work and ministry. I want to be a good steward of creation, an activist for environmental health, and a promoter of Global Health. Ever since I can remember, I have seen children die of preventable and curable diseases. I have watched mothers die in labor because of lack of health care and health education. This has made me ask myself: how can I help stop it? I anticipate having the ability to bring about much-needed change and alleviation to poverty by using effective and better policies through my work with NGOs or non-profits; such as those affiliated with the UN, WHO, CDC, and USAID. In addition to these, other organizations include those associated with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and local organizations that maintain a sustainable development in a community.
