ABOUT MICHELE CARBONE

Dr. Michele Carbone believes success is a combination of hard work, good luck, and great collaborations with friends and colleagues. Dr. Carbone has been in the United States since the mid 1980s, and most of his research has focused on malignant mesothelioma, a rare but fatal cancer. Malignant mesothelioma is associated with exposure to asbestos, and one of the puzzles he has tried to solve is why some people exposed to asbestos develop mesothelioma, while others do not. This central question has been one of the driving catalysts of his work.Michele Carbone was born in Rome, Italy and attended the La Sapienza for his medical training. When Dr. Carbone entered his early twenties, he accepted a Visiting Fellow position at the National Institutes of Health\'s Child Health Division, part of the National Institutes of Health. After working at the NIH for several years, Dr. Michele Carbone realized that he loved the work environment that is so characteristic of the US - an environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and dedication, fostering academic and professional growth. Dr. Carbone is a strong proponent of multidisciplinary collaborative team research. His teams have been characterized by laboratory research, fieldwork, and by collaborative teamwork. His research team includes scientists from multiple countries, who specialize in different disciplines including pathology, surgery, genetics, molecular biology, geology and mineralogy, and public health. The University of Hawaii asked Dr. Michele Carbone to accept the challenge of \"turning around\" a failing cancer center. From 2008 until the end of 2014, Dr. Carbone had the good fortune to work with leaders of hospitals, architects and scientists in making sure UH\'s Cancer Center renewed its P30 grant. They achieved some remarkable goals: built a state-of-the-art building, obtained NCI designation, created a consortium of hospitals, and improved charitable fundraising.
