ABOUT MICHAIL KARPENKO
I am an International Welding Engineer (IWE) with extensive experience in research and industry projects in welding technology across Germany and New Zealand. I hold a Mechanical & Welding Engineering degree from Kiev Polytechnic Institute and a PhD (Dr-Ing.) in Engineering from the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. I actively contribute to several Standards New Zealand and Australia Committees, including WD-003, which is involved in the revision of welding-fabrication and quality standards such as AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS ISO 3834, AS/NZS 2980, AS/NZS ISO 9606, and AS/NZS 5131. I played a significant role in the development and implementation of the New Zealand Steel Fabrication Certification Scheme (SFC). Since its introduction in 2014, over 90% of New Zealand’s annual structural steel output has been produced by SFC-certified fabricators. I wear multiple hats in my role(s). As the General Manager of Fab 4.0 and the Welding Center at HERA, I am responsible for leading a team of experts who deliver a range of technical services to member companies, including consulting, training, audits, and the acquisition and delivery of various R&D projects and grants. As the General Manager of HERA Certifications Ltd, I am responsible for delivering certification services to customers in accordance with ISO 3834, SFC, and AS/NZS 5131. I also oversee the maintenance of accreditation to the requirements of the International Institute of Welding (IIW) and ISO 17065.Research and Professional InterestsDesign of Welded Joints: Specialising in seismic and high cyclic fatigue applications.Smart Manufacturing 4.0: Integrating advanced technologies to enhance manufacturing efficiency including robotics.TOC: Applications of the Theory of Constraints in fabrication.AI-Based Quality Monitoring Systems: Leveraging artificial intelligence to improve quality assurance and compliance.Circular design 4.0: design optimisation for sustainability in steel construction.
