About Matt Guzman
Hey! My name is Matt, and I am a sports journalist and storyteller. Currently, I am a student at the University of Missouri - Columbia pursuing a bachelor of arts with a journalism and communications emphasis, as well as the lead reporter for San Antonio Spurs On SI. At MU, I first served as the sports editor for the university\'s student-run publication, The Maneater, and wrote for the Columbia Daily Tribune — a city-wide newspaper — where I served as a preps correspondent. Additionally, I serve as a staff writer for Sports Illustrated\'s team-specific sites, where I write occasionally for for the Missouri Tigers and mainly the Spurs, covering the team both remotely and in-person as credentialed media.Some of my previous stops have been covering the Milwaukee Bucks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys and Ohio State Buckeyes for On SI, as well as the NFL for Men\'s Journal. I also interned with The Kansas City Star in the summer of 2024, writing about the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs and everything in-between. I\'ve been blessed to secure interviews with figures the likes of John Wall, Randy Travis, Chase Young, Tre Jones, Stephon Castle, Julian Champagnie and Dan Hurley, as well as speak to representatives from the Spurs, the NBA, Fanatics, New Balance, SickKids and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. All in all, I’ve covered the NBA in several capacities, including in-person for Summer League, the NBA Draft and All-Star Weekend; MLB; NCAA; WNBA; and MLS with credentials.I find it intriguing that in the world of professional sports, it tends to be forgotten that athletes are people, too. I intend to explore this interest as I further my career, telling their stories with narrative writing, hooking ledes and passionate words to reflect their true, behind-the-scenes character. With over bylines and counting, I am focused on putting forward my best writing — gaining invaluable experience by covering the Spurs — to maintain an unwavering commitment to excellent journalism and storytelling. What I’ve been able to accomplish so far has been nothing short of a dream.After all, there are plenty of stories out there. I want to find them.
