Grow or wither; just like the brain, our leadership and management skills get stronger or weaker. Do you have major goals, projects or expectations that drive you to improve or the opposite, become trampled? As we are all doing more with less, picking up additional responsibilities and adding bureaucracy daily, dealing with being over scheduled, behind on mandatory training, endless conference calls plus all of the day to day duties; how do we possibly make time for some self improvement and or better planning?I recommend a simple tool that can be applied universally to work on your highest priorities; it is called the 9.59 rule. Here is how it works; you schedule weekly nine minutes and fifty nine seconds to block time out where you WILL focus, without distraction on your project. There will be times when you barely have the energy and concentration to complete the ten minutes, but you are much better off already. You will have many other times when you get engrossed into the flow state of the project and roll off an hour and a half of pure productive planning, strategic thinking and or personal development. I encourage my team members to at least spend this weekly time on Fridays to review their week and plan out next steps.
