ABOUT KATHRYN MCCULLY

Dr Kathryn McCully is the Manager of Art & Design (Christchurch & Timaru campuses) and the New Zealand Broadcasting School at Ara Te Pukenga which includes the oversight of approximately 40 tutorial team members delivering on the Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications (Journalism, Screen Production & Radio), the Bachelor of Design (Applied Visual Art, Motion Design, Photography/Videography, Fashion & Visual Communication Design), and level 4 and 5 bridging certificates and diplomas. McCully was previously a Programme Manager for the Creative Industries at the Southern Institute of Technology. This included oversight of the Bachelor of Screen Arts (Animation, Film, Game Design, Digital Fashion Technology, Content Creation & Concept Art). McCully completed her PhD through the Auckland University of Technology. The research - DIY Museums, explored a decentralised museum model that regarded the city and region (Waihopai, Murihiku) as the site for responsive, intermittent acts of museum-making performed by and through the community. The thesis argues that differentiating communities as ‘amateurs’, in the expression of their own unique bodies of knowledge, characterises how adherence to rigid codes of professionalism creates ruptures or ‘disremption’ (Digger, 1994) between communities and their museums. McCully was the Manager/Curator of the Ashburton Public Art Gallery from 2005 to 2011.
