ABOUT JULIAN STOPP
Curiosity - Self-Improvement - Independence are three adjectives that best describe my character. Curiosity drove me into the field of science as I always had the urge to understand how things are really working. Today, curiosity is driving me in research, to answer some of the \"How\" questions in biology, like how are leukocytes integrating chemokine signaling into spatial migration? Following my curiosity, I gained a broad insight into several areas of life sciences by working in the fields of virology, medical- & industrial- biotechnology and immunology. This curiosity is also driving my determination to improve myself by learning. I am always interested in further expanding my skills and have attended courses and seminars related to my field of study as well as far outside of it. I have taken courses in statistics, programming (machine learning, R, python, MATLAB), physics (e.g. dark matter) and math (e.g. differential equations, linear algebra, stochasticity), which have helped me expand my knowledge to support my career. The ability to work independently on challenging projects is also a hallmark of my character. During both my Master\'s thesis and PhD I have preferred to work on new projects where little previous knowledge of the material was established in the lab. This requires a lot of establishment work which I have been able to achieve successfully without extensive supervision. I am not in need of micromanagement and am perfectly capable of working and progressing on my own.I further enjoy working in an interdisciplinary environment as in the institute of my PhD program. At IST Austria, we are able to foster strong interactions between scientists of different fields like math, physics, neuroscience and biology with diverse backgrounds and topics. These diverse interactions, which have helped me to develop broader viewpoints and scientific perspectives, which have been invaluable in my development as a researcher.
