WORK HISTORY
Chief Operating Officer, Hazard Hospital @Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH)
Hazard, KY, US
Collaborates with Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to lead a cross-functional turnaround team in the flagship of a 14-hospital system in Eastern Kentucky. This 358-bed hospital is now focused on improving operational performance, financial health, and overall efficiency, with particular emphasis on addressing unique rural challenges. Operational and Financial Turnaround: Improved hospital net profit from a loss of $4.5M in FY22 to a gain of $23M in FY24 by optimizing resource allocation, reducing waste, reducing contract labor through growing employed nurses. Process and Productivity Improvements: Hospital has improved from 55% productivity in March 2023 to hitting 95% productivity goals in 18 months. Staffing and Workforce Management: Changing the previous autocratic “top down” management culture with a “bottom up” collaborative leadership culture has brought back many nurses from travel jobs. Retention among unskilled operations labor has increased 25%. Patient Care and Quality: Elevating care standards collaboratively with the CNO and CMO repaired hospital’s reputation and increased patient care scores from an abysmal 20% to 75% top box score. Project Management: Executive Champion for $55+M in capital improvement projects including complete renovation of 9 OR suites and support areas in Surgery Department, MRI & CT machine upgrades and replacement, new Cardiothoracic Surgery Program, and significant infrastructure improvements. Community and Stakeholder Engagement: Establish relationships with local organizations, businesses, and government bodies to support community health initiatives and increase local healthcare utilization. Data-Driven Decision Making: Use data analytics through Tableau, Axiom, spreadsheets, and other tools to monitor performance metrics, patient outcomes, and staff productivity. Relies on insights from these metrics to make informed decisions and drive continuous improvement efforts.
