ABOUT ZELALEM LEMA MOTI
Zelalem Lema Moti boasts over a decade of experience in facilitating, consulting, and researching innovation pathways within agri-food systems and natural resource management. Prior to obtaining his PhD, he contributed to various international development projects at ILRI/CGIAR, specializing in designing and leading multi-stakeholder engagements to promote the development, adoption, and scaling of farmer-centric best practices and inclusive innovations. In his doctoral research, Zelalem focused on evaluating the effectiveness of multi-stakeholder interactions through innovation platforms at different levels (community, district, and national). This aimed to address complex farm-level technical and institutional challenges hindering local innovation in Ethiopian Highlands smallholder agriculture. He has published two impactful articles from his PhD research in the Agricultural Systems journal, with two more papers under review for the Journal of Agronomy for Sustainable Development and the Journal of Innovation and Development. Zelalem excels in identifying, mapping, and facilitating interactions among diverse actors in value chains or systems, fostering collaboration to co-innovate and solve complex problems. His previous role as a casual academic staff/research assistant in Ecosystem Management at UNE involves evaluating sustainability case studies of local businesses and farms conducted by students from across Australia. His current role at CSIRO as a Research Scientist in Innovation Systems focuses on understanding barriers and enablers for scaling sustainable agricultural practices that support less input uses and maximise the profitability and sustainability of agriculture in Australia. He is working with great minds with a team at CSIRO engaged in the emerging field of sustainability transitions within agri-food systems. He is leveraging his expertise in innovation studies to contribute to the understanding of complex innovation processes and the facilitation of interactions among stakeholders to support the development, use and scaling of innovation that supports the transition of agri-food systems towards low chemical and low emission sustainability.
