WORK HISTORY

Oct 2019 — Present

Regional Councillor @Environment Canterbury

Christchurch, NZ

Elected to represent South Christchurch-Ōwhanga. Faced with climate change globally, huge losses in native biodiversity nationally and nitrate and other water pollution issues locally, I have supported positive change and worked collaboratively to find the balance we need to prosper whilst protecting the natural resources we care about and rely upon for our health and wellbeing.Specific changes I\'ve led include- A local rate for biodiversity projects within the Christchurch district boundary amounting to $1M per year to support delivery of landscape scale biodiversity outcomes by community-led organisations- Reducing child bus fare increases - these often impact in multiples and are critical for getting to school- The tertiary student discounted bus fare (after unsuccessfully trying for U25s)- patronage in this group has grown hugely- Reducing the minimum top up on Metrocards from $10 to $5 - that $5 makes a big difference for some- Increased Enviroschool funding so more schools could join this fabulous hands-on environmental education programme- Funding for It’s Time Canterbury, a website with well-evidenced trustworthy information about climate change and what your local councils are doing- An information-drive for private well owners, as well as additional funding for groundwater pollution research.Key councillor roles held- Chair, Strategy and Policy Committee, mid-2024 to present- Deputy Chair, Air Quality, Transport and Urban Development, 2022- mid-2024- Co-chair, Climate Change Action Committee, 20••••22- Audit and Risk Committee member, 2021-present- Council representative, Christchurch City Council\'s Coastal Hazards Working Group- Council representative, Whaka-Ora Healthy Harbour Governance Group.

ABOUT VICKY SOUTHWORTH HONS MWRM

A dedicated environmental professional with technical and governance skills. An engineering geologist for 9 years working for private and public sector clients within multi-disciplinary teams, supporting diverse projects, from housing to major infrastructure, with rigorous data collection, analysis and interpretation, and a strong commitment to Health and Safety. A strategic planner for 6 years developing minerals and waste policy for a major minerals-producing county, requiring skills in stakeholder engagement, data analysis, planning policy and legislation. After moving to New Zealand in 2012 I gained a Master of Water Resource Management from the Waterways Centre, University of Canterbury. My BRANZ-supported dissertation was on property-scale water sensitive urban design solutions to reduce both pollution and flooding in our local waterways. Involved in biodiversity and water management decision-making in Canterbury from 2016 and elected to the Canterbury Regional Council for South Christchurch-Ōwhanga constituency in 2019. It has been an absolute privilege to represent my constituency, build relationships with mana whenua and a wide range of stakeholders, and apply my knowledge and skills to improve outcomes across the region over the last 6 years. Developing constructive relationships has been essential in this role. I have strived consistently to deliver environmental outcomes applying an equity lens to support long term sustainability for generations to come. I also love being hands-on with local community projects, planting native trees and trapping. I have helped design and build two backyard-style DIY demonstration rain gardens in the Avon-Ōtākaro catchment.
