About Tommy Esposito
Every few weeks the Fed moves, a jobs report lands, or a private-credit fund cracks. And somewhere a CFO has to decide by Monday what it means for their balance sheet and how it could impact their strategic plan. That is the conversation I have for a living. CFOs and Treasurers responsible for billions of dollars in investment portfolios at hospitals and banks have sought my counsel on asset allocation, capital planning and ALM strategy. They know that they will get an unbiased answer from me that is brimming with integrity and honesty, and is backed up by facts. In most cases, I find there is no single correct answer to the strategic question. We collaborate, we ask questions, and we arrive at the best solution together. If your team is rethinking liquidity or investment strategy heading into 2027, text my cell 30••••••02 with your name & question and we can set up a call any time. Off the clock I play bass in a band called Hippocampus and suffer through Phillies and Eagles seasons.

Collaborate with CFOs, Chief Investment Officers and Treasurers at nonprofit hospitals to create a strategic framework to govern a risk-adjusted investment strategy. Includes the following: 1 - Resources - determine Levels of Liquidity in the investment portfolio, based on how quickly assets could be liquidated in a crisis. Look at both available on-balance resources and potentially accessible resources like lines of credit, CP, asset monetization, and debt capacity.2 - Risks - collaborate with clients to identify the top quantifiable risks from operations, strategic initiatives, the capital plan, and the debt structure. Identify risk offsets in place (insurance, LOCs) and potential management actions to reduce identified risks and establish Net Risk Exposure. 3 - Risk-Adjusted Returns - formulate an investment strategy that sets an asset allocation prioritizing protecting hospital operations (based on the Net Risk Exposure), while pursuing risk-optimized returns with excess risk capacity. Establish a Volatility Capacity that sets the investment boundary for a client\'s Risk Tolerance. Collaborate with Investment Advisors (internal or external) to implement a 3-pool approach to liquidity management: Operating Cash, Liquidity Pool (based on Net Risk Exposure) and Long Term Pool.Kaufman Hall provides financial planning, debt advisory, performance improvement, and balance sheet advisory consulting for non-profit hospitals across the United States.
