ABOUT TOKA HUSSEIN

Driven by passion for making science accessible and inpactful, I\'m a 4th-year Biochemistry PhD candidate at the University of Ottawa. My research explores how lipids modulate the function of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels, a focus with promising therapeutic applications for addiction, epilepsy, and other neurological diseases. Through molecular biology and electrophysiology techniques, my research uncovers molecular mechanisms that could inform future treatmentsBeyond the lab, I am dedicated to bridging the gap between science and society. I leverage years of experience in STEM mentorship and education, curriculum design, and science communication to craft engaging scientific, educational content. Whether it’s teaching young minds, developing learning strategies, or creating compelling voiceover work and podcasts, I’m passionate about making complex science accessible and engaging.I\' especially interested in projects that bridge science, education, and communication, transforming scientific discoveries into actionable solutions and meaningful stories.Outside of work, you\'ll likely find me hiking, losing my voice to Karaoke, or \'experimenting\' in the kitchen. Some recipes are peer-reviewed, others. well, they’re still in the R&D phase!Having lived in the UAE, Egypt, Canada, and China, I consider myself a global citizen. I love exploring new cultures, visiting art and history museums, and spending time with family and friends.
