ABOUT TOM SCHMIDT

At Zebra Technologies, my current passion is leading a large global product management, architecture and R&D team focused on delivering large AI driven SaaS platforms and software applications for Mobile Computers and printers. I have successfully implemented a centralized data science function and shifted to an AI first software development approach, reducing the size of the R&D team by 60% in two years while increasing output by 40%. I have also opened a second R&D center in Brno, Czech Republic to compliment our main R&D center in Bangalore, India.I am an experienced transformational leader with a successful track record of digital, AI and organizational transformations across R&D, Product Management and Business Strategy within large and midsized hi-tech companies. Proven success with smaller product start-ups and large established product lines. Adapt at small team and large organizational management and leadership, having led combined projects of over $175M, controlled annual R&D budgets of more $45M, and led professional teams of over 165 technical and business specialists and industry leaders.I am passionate about technology and its application to solve business and real world problems. I’m most productive working in a high-energy environment with talented people who I can lead and inspire. My greatest professional joy comes from seeing my direct reports succeed and grow. but yes I do love to beat the pants off the competition. Who I work for, and who I work with is important to me, as is giving back to my community.Perviously, as a Sr. Director at Cisco, I directed Product Management, Engineering & Business Strategy teams across engineering, marketing, testing, financial analysis and product & portfolio strategy. Key projects included the development of a custom-built test automation platform, the introduction of new product lines, the design of software based subscription products, the development of non-linear pricing models and the implementation of innovative product configuration engines that enabled major expansions to the product portfolio. Notable achievements include the reengineering of a $500M Product and Services portfolio that resulted in a 15% increase in bookings and decreased in COGS of 8%,and the standardization of a methodology used for new product development that reduced time to market by over 10%.
