About Surya Tejaswini Kandavilli

In the digital age, software engineers are the backbone of any economy. Having gained experience as a software engineer for 3.5 years at Cisco Systems, I have come back to academia to deep dive into designing distributed systems, building machine learning models, and mastering algorithms and data structures. During my work at Cisco Systems, I worked on a plethora of projects as a back-end engineer, the most prominent being working on the Cisco Ironport Email Security Appliance. The ESA has features that are used by businesses to communicate securely, fight Business Email Compromise, and avoid malware, phishing, and spam attacks. I got an opportunity to work on several features like anti-spam, anti-virus, policy enforcement, email routing, DLP scanner, and DLP policy manager. Built CLI commands for end-users to configure the ESA, trace issues, and apply email filters resulting in improved customer renewal rates.Post Cisco, I worked on developing my front-end skills and built HTML web pages (static webpages) during my GRE preparation. The purpose of the webpage was to retrieve the meaning of any word (using APIs), categorize high-frequency words, and help me revise. Thus began my journey with HTML/JavaScript. At the University of Florida, I got a chance to explore distributed operating system concepts and apply front-end knowledge while working on emulating Twitter functionality using Phoenix Framework and jQuery. Currently, I am designing a personal expense tracker using VueJS and PostgreSQL databases and am aiming to deploy this on AWS EC2. I believe this experience will broaden my understanding of deployment and scalability. I am self-motivated and focus on learning and growing continuously. I will bring my zeal to succeed and a good work ethic to the position offered. I look forward to growing with the company and providing an impact.
