ABOUT SOFÍA MALDONADO-SUÁREZ
Born in Puerto Rico (1985), with a Cuban mother, her visual language is nourished by the tropical color and musical culture of the Caribbean. Painter and abstract muralist who uses color as a signifier of abandonment, not as a beautifying agent. Her site-specific projects are expressive, influenced by contemporary gestures and her socio political reality. In her most recent project, Femtrap, she integrated the culture of reggaetón & trap hispano, immersing herself into \"performance\" for the first time. Currently she is shifting into a more eco-friendly art practice, exploring the use of natural dyes, organic pigments, and opening a dialog about the new Caribbean landscape, in response to global warming. International selections of which she has participated are: the Whitney Museum Biennial, NY (2017), MOLAA, Los Angeles (2017), I Bienal de Asunción, Paraguay (2014), CAAM, Canary Islands (2013), Museum of Art and Design (2013), Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico (2012), Museo del Barrio Biennial, NY (2011) and the Havana Biennial, Cuba (2008). Recently she was part of L.A. Summer Residency Otis College of Art and Design, CA (2019).
