ABOUT RUBEN STEWART

I am the Senior Fellow for Land Warfare at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), focused on the character, conduct, and evolution of contemporary and future land warfare.I approach land warfare as both a science and an art. While equipment, technology, and data are central to modern military analysis, outcomes in land conflict remain decisively shaped by non-physical components such as human judgment, training, morale, and leadership.My work therefore spans force preparation, operational art, and combat decision-making, as well as the interaction between land forces, other domains, elements of national power, and the civilian environment. I place particular emphasis on how conceptual and moral components, including command, professional education, and the societies from which forces are drawn, condition adaptation and operational effectiveness, and on how the integration of AI and uncrewed systems into these functions reshapes fighting power and the exercise of command.This perspective is informed by rigorous analysis alongside professional experience in active conflict environments and sustained engagement with military forces during ongoing land combat.
