About Rich Jones
As the eighth chair of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), I head up the seven-member board that establishes generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for public companies, private companies and nongovernmental not-for-profit organizations in the United States.I bring to the FASB deep technical accounting experience obtained over more than three decades with Ernst & Young (EY). An experienced leader, I have a proven track record for driving consensus in the complex world of accounting standards and financial reporting. Prior to my appointment to the FASB, I was a Partner at EY and served as the firm’s chief accountant, leading a large and diverse team of professional colleagues in the firm’s national office. In that role, I directed efforts to help the firm’s clients and engagement teams understand accounting requirements and developed the firm’s views on proposed accounting standards. I also oversaw EY’s accounting efforts across all sectors: public companies, private companies, not-for-profit organizations, employee benefit plans, and government entities; and authored numerous EY technical publications.During my career, I served on the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council (FASAC) from 2016 to 2018. I was also a member of the Accounting Standards Executive Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) from 2003–2008.I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the State University of New York, Binghamton, in 1987. I am a certified public accountant in the state of New York.

I help guide the board and staff in its vital mission to establish and improve accounting standards and to educate stakeholders on how to implement them successfully—following the board’s extensive due process, designed to educate and elicit input from a diverse group of U.S. stakeholders. The FASB’s mission to establish and improve financial accounting and reporting standards to provide useful information to investors and other users of financial reports and educate stakeholders on how to most effectively understand and implement those standards. We are privileged to perform this mission as an independent entity. That independence is something that we must continuously earn through our performance. We know that independent doesn’t mean isolated – we are an organization that is accountable to our stakeholders and eagerly embrace our interaction with them.
