ABOUT RUSSELL HELSABECK-OCHOA
I am a literacy consultant, specializing in professional learning design and facilitation, curriculum implementation, and leadership coaching. Previously, I served as Manager of Curriculum and Professional Development, instructional coach, and educator at DC Public Schools. My major accomplishments include developing and publishing a proprietary curriculum for DCPS Secondary ELA teachers by building and leading a strong network of teacher leaders and curriculum writers, scaling the use of Canvas LMS by English teachers across the District of Columbia using structured change management principles, and fostering curiosity and a love of reading in the hearts of thousands of middle school-aged children. The past four years have been full of transitions, from DC to Baltimore, and then from Baltimore to El Paso. At each new location I have taught English language arts and reading at the secondary level. I maintain English language arts, English as a second language, special education, and technology education certifications in Maryland and Texas. My goal is to translate my successes in the classroom to the success of students in the districts I serve as a consultant. My core competencies include instructional leadership, professional development, and curriculum innovation. I am well-versed in the IB middle years program, change management, inquiry-based learning, Reading and Language Arts pedagogy and curriculum, emergent bilingual programming, and inclusion education. I become the go-to \"tech guy\" on nearly every team I join. I am an empathetic listener, value emotional intelligence, and love to see others succeed.
