WORK HISTORY
Transportation Planning Technician @City Of Santa Monica
Santa Monica, CA, US
The City of Santa Monica is a national leader in environmental, economic, and social sustainability, with ambitious goals including zero waste by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. I support the City Traffic Engineer on the Traffic Engineering team within the Mobility Division on traffic operations and system modernization initiatives. My work includes assisting with the transition to the City’s new Transportation Management System through data collection, documentation, and participation in training sessions. I also collect and organize legacy traffic data from the previous system for recordkeeping and analysis. In addition, I provide administrative and technical support, such as developing updated job descriptions and materials for the engineering team. I conduct field observations and data collection related to signage, striping, signal operations, and other traffic control elements, while also supporting special projects and the daily operations of the Traffic Engineering team.

ABOUT RYAN ROBINSON
I am driven by curiosity and a passion for making a positive impact through my work. My core expertise lies in asking the right questions to understand and improve systems, which has allowed me to thrive in small teams across varied fields. I have worn many hats in my career, specializing in operations and administration, contracts, compliance, cross-cultural communication, staff management and training, and policy analysis. I also have extensive experience in restaurants and hospitality, where I had the privilege of working with a handful of James Beard Award-winning chefs.Over the past decade, I founded an industrial arts collective in a warehouse full of laser cutters and welders, created monthly pop-up dinners that highlighted local food systems in unexpected locations—from remote forest preserves to abandoned warehouses—and contributed to USDA reports for Congress on the economic and environmental impacts of the bioproducts industry. I also managed the research efforts and operations for two research departments: one focused on sustainability and the other on agricultural and environmental research. Most recently, I led operations for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing climate solutions. When I’m not working, you can find me in the ocean or adventuring on my bike, exploring the places where the pavement ends and the trails begin. And also, chasing sunsets.
