ABOUT MICHELLE CHUMSAE

My career as a marketing copywriter began unceremoniously, during my senior year of high school, with me screaming at a highway billboard inside a speeding car. The headline I had suggested for my dad’s marketing team had been selected and produced in hugenormous format. In college, I interned at Buffalo’s largest ad agency. I loved that energy of taking the train downtown and walking through those doors. It was good to be mentored by their copy lead on Things that You Do Not Learn in Journalism School. Who knew that “hot and bothered” does not mean “angry?” I’ve been fortunate to become the voice of more brands than I can count. First I wrote copy AND designed, because I loved both and couldn’t bear to choose. Eventually copywriting won out, but as a highly visual communicator, I do my best work collaborating with visual creatives. As a “Type A” achiever, I’m driven for excellence. I won’t lie…I’ve been shocked over the years to be chosen for the senior class award at my high school, recognized by national publications for my advertising work, and nominated for a Boston Music Award. But I was not surprised to perform in Boston’s coolest rock venues or at Carnegie Hall. Practice and preparation pays off; you just keep putting your head down and honing that thing you are compelled to do. I am grateful that copywriting is never the same, but has always there for me. It got me working when our ailing son was living in the hospital. It found me again when I was furloughed at the start of the pandemic, watching all the free webinars and doing some soul-searching. Telling customer stories is always rewarding; during Covid it has been profound. Finding my voice to tell my own personal caregiving story without fear has been powerful.(Spoiler alert: nothing hones those professional skills like advocating for your child’s every need.) Almost 30 unpredictable years have taught me to sniff out the creative work and people that give you all the feels, empower you to move the needle for the client, and insist that you be your authentic self. Oh, and I still love writing ad headlines the most, still have to contain my don’t-crash-the-car wonderment that I get to do this stuff.
