ABOUT MARION A. CABANES
In 2009, I had the privilege to work for the Institute for Liberty and Democracy (ILD) in Peru, founded by the world-renowned economist Hernando de Soto, on the formalisation of informal economy in West Africa. This was the turning point that gave me a taste, later a passion, for sustainable development. Later on, I discovered the world of evaluation and its community of evaluators in Australia. I got lucky that an interesting project on Indigenous economic participation in Australia led me to this world. I self-studied monitoring and evaluation for months until I decided to do a second Master, this time, of Evaluation. I practiced program monitoring and evaluation in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. Here I am following my wish to practice evaluation with ethics, honesty and in diverse contexts with the objective to increase our understanding of complex issues and situations, to be intentionally more participatory in MEAL processes, and to collectively build knowledge to adapt to this ever-changing world. Work aside, I am an avid runner, yoga practitioner and currently learning Arabic and more about Nature-based Solutions to adapt to climate change. Back in 2013 I launched a blog called Far From Africa (https://farfromafrica.wordpress.com/) for which I went around Australia to capture unique stories of Africans living there to foster cross-cultural understanding between Africans and Australians. I got interviewed by the French Melbourne-based newspaper Le Petit Journal de Melbourne, the Australian national radio channel SBS and the community media channel Africa Media Australia about the Far From Africa project. In November 2014, I received the Community Initiative of the Year award at the Parliament House of Victoria.
