ABOUT MARIELLE FROOMAN
Undergraduate researcher and rising fourth-year biochemistry major with the Gutekunst Laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Current work focuses on the design and synthesis of novel small molecule inhibitors to aid in an interdisciplinary study involving polyketide synthase (PKS) systems. By investigating the interactions between these inhibitors and PKSs, I aim to uncover mechanisms which will inform PKS bioengineering efforts. This summer, I am working in the Tranmer Laboratory at the University of Manitoba. My work focuses on the design and development of boron-based drugs for use in clinical settings, specifically targeting neurodegeneration pathways during amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Along with my lab work, I am currently co-authoring a review of emerging boronic compounds in medicine. Previous work during my time at the McShan Laboratory at Georgia Institute of Technology is published in the journal Scientific Reports. My first-author manuscript outlines novel findings pertaining to MHC immune surveillance of peptides derived from the causative agent of malaria, the Plasmodium parasite. Passionate about medicinal applications of natural product synthesis.
