ABOUT LYNDA SPIVEY
I once considered my greatest weakness as feeling awkward meeting new people, making small talk, and forming new connections. I was someone who only truly opened up with a few close friends, and stayed pretty quiet when among larger groups. When I considered how this might impact my future career, I decided to make a concerted effort to pop that awkward bubble. So I jumped in the deep end and took sales roles that required me to talk to numerous new people, every day. Do you know how many travelers come through the San Diego Airport Enterprise Rent-a-Car in a single day? Need-to-say, I had to get comfortable, fast. Meeting new people can still be a bit nerve wracking for me, but I learned to trust myself and lead with confidence and authenticity. I love good 1-on-1 conversations with colleagues that enable knowledge sharing, collaborating on ideas, and developing trust. I find that meeting people where they are helps to move projects forward and creates more professional ease and flow. I am a big proponent of the growth mindset and seeing challenges as opportunities for improvement. I turned a weakness into a strength and became more comfortable with who I am and how I relate and interact with people. This has enabled me to form honest, collaborative relationships that create cross-functional unity, find common ground with different stakeholders, and develop more open-mindedness and engagement.
