ABOUT LISA CODY

I am a history professor and writer a little bit overly obsessed with the past.(I dream in the eighteenth century.) More formally, I am a cultural historian who works on the history of gender, family, law, and medicine primarily in Britain. My publications range from histories of graffiti to ideas about ugliness, from midwives\' work to marital rape, and lots in between. I am the recipient of numerous prizes for academic articles and first monograph, Birthing the Nation: Sex, Science, and the Conception of Eighteenth-Century Britons. My current book projects is \"Sex and Sensibility: A Theory of Marital Sentiments and the Making of English Lives, 16••••57.\" My most recent refereed article appears in the October 2022 Journal of British Studies on the history of marital rape and has won both the James L. Clifford Prize from the American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies and the best article prize of the year from the Pacific Coast Conference on British Studies. I am a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, am currently vice president of the PCCBS, and recently finished a three-year elected term of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies. Past and current posts include the American Historical Association and the Pacific-AHA, serving on scholarly prize and fellowship committees and editorial boards. I was appointed by the Governor of California to serve on the California State Bar\'s Judicial Nominees Evaluation Commission (20••••21) and occasionally serve as a pro tem commissioner. I have served as History Department Chair, Associate Dean of the Faculty at Claremont McKenna College, and will be the coordinator of Legal Studies at CMC beginning in the fall of 2024. Long ago, I worked as a graphic artist and designer. When I was in high school I won a national contest to design a poster for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. My work designing posters, logos, local advertising helped me pay for college. Although I do not have time to paint or design seriously anymore, I infuse all of my teaching with visual and creative projects. My bigger project include creating a real game,\"Jane Austen and the Game of Life\" in my Jane Austen course and an interactive mystery film-with a dead body dragged into class-for my students in \"The Age of Elizabeth and Shakespeare.\" I love bringing the past alive however I can for students and audiences, and if that involves some crazy flights of fancy, so be it!
