About Lakeya Omogun

I’m a Professor of Language, Literacy & Culture as well as a creative writer, and TEDx speaker with a deep commitment to shifting static ideas about identity in educational, community, and digital spaces. My identity as both Nigerian and Black American is reflected in my current research project, which explores Black African immigrant youth schooling and social experiences in the United States. I specifically focus on how their new experiences with race in America (re)shapes their identity, language, and culture. My creative writing and public speaking – which mostly focus on identity, race, and society – have been instrumental in fostering public conversations and social impact, reaching over readers and listeners. I have been featured in ESSENCE Magazine, Human Parts, and ZORA Magazine. I have also spoken on TEDx, NPR, and SXSW. In 2020, my social impact was recognized, as I won DivInc’s “Rising Star of the Year” award. I also have extensive experience in educational consulting; teaching; community-based organization (CBO) management; program development & leadership; training; and consulting. I partner with educators, schools, and other organizations to listen closely for ways to create equitable learning and work environments. Areas of Expertise: Identity | Immigration | Education | Social Impact | Language | Race | Children & Youth Interested in my consulting, professional workshops, or speaking services?
