About John Tobin

New tools are continuously emerging to serve the AEC industry, and I enjoy exploring the improvements they offer. I have spearheaded new technologies my entire career, from the \'90\'s through the present. As an early adopter of technology and software I realized a decade ago that data analytics offered great benefits for the building industry. I have been a lifelong learner on a quest for continual improvement, as my recent Certificate in Machine Learning (2025) demonstrates. For example, I started using Revit 1.0 in then 10 years later, leveraged the BIM process to improve project delivery. Then as VP of Operations, I totally overhauled a fragmented, Excel-based operations system in 2016 to a centralized dashboard model using (then brand-new) Power BI tools that allowed for aggregation of project and staffing data. Any software that improves the delivery of AEC content – drawings, specs, reports, operational data – is a valid focus for me. Most recently, I have spearheaded data tools for advanced delivery, especially data analytics and machine learning.My \"secret weapon\" for change is culture, building excitement and finding those other early adopters that help drive the change deep into an organization. Excitement is in fact the key ingredient in organizational change, but luckily new technologies are inherently exciting, so all I have to do is help reveal that! My other secret weapon is I tend to see things early - I jokingly say \"my problem is I live three years in the future\". Sometimes a curse, but usually in the end it works out as things evolve.
