About Alex Chen

I enjoy hands-on lab work and following experiments from study design to the data analysis and investigating the causes of errors to improve! My lab experience began in the Shou Lab at Fred Hutch, where I did extensive studies on yeast cells exploring metabolism mutations with an evolutionary biology lens. The experience included experiences such as cell culturing, running analyses on the spectrophotometer, and data analysis. I was then fortunate enough to land an internship at a biotech startup in Seattle, AVM Biotechnology. I designed and ran experiments testing the dosage of AVM drugs on mouse models. There I acquired skills including mammalian cell culture, mouse care and handling, various ways of dosing mice, Flow Cytometry, and data analysis (Prism). AVM sparked my interest in industry research and as I dove further into the pharmaceutical scene. The following summer, I was offered an internship at Juno Therapeutics (BMS). At Juno, I worked on an instrument qualification project, increasing the throughput of cell characterization in the Process Development department. The qualification increased throughput by 70% while maintaining cost. I currently work at Juno as a Research Associate working on the early process development of a new product. I thoroughly enjoy the work I do at Juno and hope to continue exploring this cell therapy field! Skills: Mammalian cell culture, CAR T-cell processing, cell selection, documentation, mouse care and handling, mouse dosing, flow cytometry, JMP, Prism, Intermediate level FlowJo, novice level Excel VBA and Java.
