About Alan Hoffman
I provide advisory and planning visioning and review services to organizations, communities, cities, regions, and state/national governments on how to better align their long-range transportation and land use plans with identified long-term goals. I help public agencies employ deep market research to uncover how to best achieve desired outcomes and maximize Return on Investment for taxpayer dollars. Examples of successful consulting engagements include- Improving the ability of regional travel models to better measure and respond to the actual drivers of consumer choice in transportation and housing, potentially identifying many thousands of potential non-auto trips that would otherwise be left on the table- Helping regions develop long-range express transit plans that significantly improve the performance of their transportation/land use systems, including the identification of opportunities for improved bicycle, pedestrian, and new mobility options and market-driven TOD- Identifying synergies and strategies to ensure that projects better support each other and magnify their outcomes- Integrating urban design, planning, and economic development strategies with infrastructure planning- Helping planning and transportation agencies incorporate an equity focus in their work. My practice emphasizes strong team-building and collaboration skills, along with exceptional writing, presentation, graphic arts, and public-speaking skills. I have broad national and international work experience spanning 18 countries on six continents. I recently developed a plan for a Bay Area regional express transit system (ReX). I’ve authored major White Papers on long-range development policy, discussion papers, books, and studies, including \"Pricing Roads, Advancing Equity\"(co-authored with Stuart Cohen of TransForm) and \"Advanced Network Planning for Bus Rapid Transit\"(published by the US Federal Transit Administration). I’ve served as keynote speaker at major international conferences. My recent book, Sails to Trails, shows how a smart transit strategy can be leveraged to create a largely self-sustaining virtuous circle of sustainable, equitable, and resilient land redevelopment.
