About Hernan Badino

I received my PhD degree from the Goethe University Frankfurt in 2008. I worked during my PhD with the Image Based Environment Perception Group at Daimler AG in Stuttgart, Germany and joined the Carnegie Mellon University in 2009 as a postdoctoral fellow. In 2012, I was appointed a faculty position at the Robotics Institute at the Carnegie Mellon University. I joined Oculus Research in 2015. I\'m currently a research scientist director at Reality Labs working on the Metaverse at the intersection of computer vision, deep learning, computer graphics, motion capture, and telepresence systems with the ultimate goal of achieving social presence in artificial reality.

   Official Title: Research ScientistLeading the engineering organization responsible for the sensing integrity of Meta’s massive-scale volumetric capture infrastructure. Accountable for end-to-end calibration, sensing, and data integrity across exabyte-scale pipelines that enable photorealistic Codec Avatars and XR research.• Key Achievements: Massive-Scale Infrastructure: Hands-on ownership of core calibration models and system architecture for infrastructure spanning tens of thousands of cameras and lights, establishing the reliability foundation for exabyte-scale avatar pipelines. Systemic Reliability: Discovered and characterized critical thermo-mechanical failure modes in capture domes. Spearheaded a cross-disciplinary redesign (pre-heating strategy) that reduced calibration failure rates from 65.8% to 75% Weekly Active Usage (WAU) of generative AI tools, increasing engineering throughput across the organization
