ABOUT HEBA ALY
Journalist, entrepreneur and leader with expertise in aid policy, humanitarian crises, multilateralism, responsible news media and start-up management. For nearly 8 years, I ran the world\'s leading humanitarian news organization, The New Humanitarian (formerly IRIN News), overseeing strategy, editorial output, financial sustainability and operations. The New Humanitarian\'s journalism amplifies the voices of those affected by conflicts and disasters to inform more effective and accountable responses by the international community. I was a core part of the team that led TNH\'s spin-off from UN project into an independent organization: I established the governance, secured the funds and drove its strategic transformation to become the premiere information source globally on international crises, leading to growth and stability despite a fragile media environment. I was named by the World Economic Forum a \"Young Global Leader\", a coveted network of people under 40 in leadership positions around the world; and by the New African Magazine one of the 100 Most Influential Africans in 2018. In 2023, I accepted, on behalf of TNH, the Elisabeth Weintz Humanitarian Award, awarded by Harvard University.A multimedia journalist by training, I spent one decade reporting from conflict zones in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. My work for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Christian Science Monitor, Bloomberg News and IRIN News, among others, has taken me to places like Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Chad and Libya; and I received a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting for my work in northern Sudan. My TEDx Talk – \"Stop Eating Junk News\" – drives home the importance of responsible journalism from crisis zones. I have helped shape the policy debate in humanitarian aid sector through podcasts, speaking engagements and convenings, in particular driving forward the conversation about decolonising aid in a thoughtful and constructive way. I engage with a range of stakeholders on aid policy issues, both publicly and privately, from foreign ministers, parliamentarians, and UN under-secretaries-general, to CEOs of philanthropic foundations, NGO boards, private sector executives and civil society leaders. I speak English, French, Arabic and Spanish.
