About George Gard
George is an architect and urban designer with experience in a wide range of building types, with careful transformation and conservation of existing architectural resources as a central to his work. Recent work includes: the transformation of mill buildings into Phase 3 of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art; a water tower into an installation by artist James Turrell; and the careful insertion of new additions to Harvard’s significant mid-century Smith Campus Center. Most recently, George has led the design and realization of a multifamily development including several existing buildings in the heart of Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is particularly interested in ways design can act to embrace or manage processes of growth and change over time. George is passionate about research as a way to understand and improve our work. His current research focuses on embodied carbon, uniting our ‘high-performance’ and ‘transformative-reuse’ projects. This work and research has featured in presentations with colleagues from Bruner/Cott and peer firms at Greenbuild, Carbon Leadership Forum Boston, ABX, AASHE, APTNE and NESEA Building Energy. Additionally, George has taught courses in Architectural and Urban Transformation and Conservation at The Boston Architectural College and Wentworth Institute of Technology.
