ABOUT EMMA THEOBALD

I’m a marine scientist specialising in, & , with a particular focus on scaling production of the red seaweed.I have four years of hands-on experience researching and cultivating 🪸, including a PhD completed in Gladstone, Queensland. My doctoral research focused on developing cultivation techniques to support scalable ocean-based production, exploring how environmental conditions and culture methods influence reproduction, productivity, and cultivation success.More recently, I have worked in industry R&D with CH4 Global, contributing to the development of innovative approaches to improve the productivity and performance of cultivation systems in South Australia. My current work focuses on inoculum production and biomass scale-up, managing systems ranging from 150 L photobioreactors to L cultivation tanks to produce unialgal biomass and introduce novel strains into commercial pond systems for the production of methane-reducing livestock feed supplements.Earlier in my career, I worked in shellfish aquaculture, gaining several years of experience in European lobster hatcheries and offshore pilot cultivation systems integrated within a UK mussel farm.Across both research and industry settings, I enjoy developing practical solutions to scale sustainable aquaculture, from hatchery and nursery systems through to grow-out.I am particularly interested in opportunities related to:• Seaweed cultivation and hatchery systems• Scaling mariculture and aquaculture production• Applied R&D and technology development• Sustainable aquaculture and climate-positive food systems
