ABOUT DIANE SUMOSKI

I teach SMU law students child welfare law, trial advocacy skills, and how to practice law by supervising them on real cases in a legal clinic where we represent abused and neglected children as their guardians/attorneys ad litem. i seek to inspire them to carry what they have learned about child welfare into their practices and continue to assist these children and families through representation, general advocacy, financial support to like-minded organizations, or other volunteerism. I also direct an Institute for Children\'s Rights that focuses on exploring, promoting, and teaching education advocacy for foster children to better their education (and life) outcomes. The Institute also furthers the Clinic\'s mission to educate others on the issues concerning youth who age out of care. I am board certified in Child Welfare Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Until August of 2013, I spent my 25 year legal career with Carrington Coleman, a top notch Dallas law firm that is highly regarded by lawyers and judges, as well as by firm clients. Over my tenure with the firm, I developed broad and deep experience, representing national and multinational corporations and their officers and directors in complex business disputes, including securities litigation, RICO claims, breach of contract, trade secrets, non-compete, and breach of fiduciary duty litigation. I\'ve also represented individuals in connection with their business and fiduciary duty litigation, as well as their probate and trust and estate disputes. I have experience in state and federal trial and probate courts throughout Texas and the juvenile district courts in Dallas. Although I particularly enjoy the challenges and rewards of trying cases before courts and juries, I also have handled matters in the Dallas Court of Appeals and Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. I\'ve also advocated for my clients in a variety of procedural settings, including class action and multi-district litigation, FINRA (formerly NASD) arbitrations, and international arbitrations. Now my advocacy for abused children and youth aging out of foster care reaches into social service agencies, administrative agencies, and anywhere else I need to be to help my clients succeed.
