Finance & Technology - My education in finance and an MBA along with my experience at Accenture in their Technology Practice provided a solid foundation of understanding the intersection of finance and technology in business. Scope control, rigorous attention to organization design - org charts and roles & responsibilities, and project management - helped us deliver projects “On time and within budget.”2. Buy & Build - I joined family and PE-backed businesses pursuing aggressive growth and we accessed capital markets to facilitate this growth. With experience in over 100 acquisitions, I met entrepreneurs and their hard-working employees and we worked together to integrate and grow their businesses. Applying the people/process/technology ideas from my time at Accenture was instrumental in helping build efficient, durable, and scalable organizations.3. Optimize & Turnarounds - Due to the realities of industry stagnation and contraction, a major focus of management transitioned from growth to cost reduction and capital preservation. This required another level of scrutiny of everything within a business. Standard operating procedures, efficiency KPI’s, and cost reductions were critical. Employment of data capture - think IoT and Big Data - and data transparency tools (PowerBI, etc.) became tools to chase efficiencies. This required a new architecture and mindset.The pragmatic deployment of technology can yield not only scalability but also efficiency and durability of business processes. What I’m most proud of is designing organizations to meet the needs of the business and then recruiting and developing people that bring those roles and responsibilities to life. While technology matters, the difference in organizations that yield excellence ultimately comes down to having the best people and creating a collaborative environment that enables the pursuit of excellence and a sense of purpose in achieving something great.
