About Julian Vasquez Heilig

Julian Vasquez Heilig is an internationally recognized scholar and former Provost and Dean whose career integrates academic excellence, institutional strategy, and public engagement. He has held seven senior academic leadership appointments across nearly two decades in executive leadership at research universitiesDr. Vasquez Heilig has led complex academic enterprises encompassing enrollment strategy, faculty affairs, academic budgeting, research infrastructure, cross-sector partnerships, and institutional positioning. His leadership has produced rapid and measurable gains in enrollment, retention, graduation rates, fundraising performance, and national visibility.A prolific researcher, Dr. Vasquez Heilig has authored nearly 80 scholarly publications advancing equity, governance, curriculum, and leadership in K–12 and higher education policy. For a decade, Education Week ranked him among the top 200 U.S. education scholars. His research is cited by media outlets such as the New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post, Associated Press, USAToday, and Education Week. He has appeared on local and national media, including Al Jazeera, ABC, Fox, CBS, PBS, NBC, NPR, Univision, LatinoUSA, Democracy Now! and MSNBC. He has presented at more than 30 universities and eight countries across North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Beyond the academy, Dr. Vasquez Heilig has provided invited testimony for state legislatures, the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and the United Nations. He has advised presidential and gubernatorial campaigns on education policy and served in senior leadership roles within the NAACP at both state and national levels.His leadership and scholarship have been recognized with more than 30 honors, including the NAACP’s Keeper of the Flame Award, selection by Crain’s as a Notable Black Leader in Michigan, inclusion among Michigan’s Most Influential Latinos by Vive Magazine, the California Assembly Resolution 1459, designation by Governor Beshear as a Kentucky Colonel, and the University of Michigan Marsal Family School of Education Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Vasquez Heilig earned his Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Policy Analysis and an M.A. in Sociology from Stanford University. He also holds an M.A. in Higher Education and a B.A. in History and Psychology from the University of Michigan.
