ABOUT SHANA BURNETT
Dr. Burnett is deeply passionate about teaching and effectively communicating teaching strategies and leadership practices. She is particularly dedicated to assisting educators in adopting the most effective teaching practices that generate improved academic performance. She began her professional journey as a teacher in a public school located in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey. Having a strong commitment to the city, she deliberately chose to work within the same school district where she had grown up. Dr. Burnett remained in this role for over 25 years, even starting her family and raising her children in the city she held dear. Throughout her time as an educator, Dr. Burnett gained valuable experience in different roles. She worked as an instructional aide, substitute teacher, math and science teacher, teacher facilitator/coach, basketball and football assistant coach, alternate route professor and ultimately became a vice principal and then a principal. These positions allowed her to be a part of various school communities within the Newark Public School District, giving her insight into different leadership styles and the dynamics of different school cultures. Working with different administrators exposed Dr. Burnett to diverse leadership styles and their impact on the learning environment. These experiences fostered her deep understanding of cultural transformation and the importance of transformational leadership. Inspired by this, she conducted research in these areas while pursuing her doctorate. She was always searching for innovative ways to enhance education for children and focused her research on effective methods to support staff and parents in promoting academic growth. In addition to her role as an educator, Dr. Burnett also created the Urban Professional Development event. This event aimed to help individuals achieve personal and professional fitness, recognizing the close connection between physical and professional well-being. The event provided a fun learning environment for professionals in the community. It is worth mentioning that Dr. Burnett has written grants and served on various educational committees. She has also published several educational articles and is a strong advocate for student achievement and improving the overall quality of public education. Undoubtedly, she has made a significant impact in the field of education and serves as a role model for others. “It’s the going through that helps you get through” -Dr Shana Burnett
