ABOUT DILARA PAHIRDIN

From the moment I arrived in New Zealand as a first-generation immigrant, I’ve been navigating unfamiliar systems with persistence, adaptability, and purpose. Growing up in Christchurch, I found my voice in both academic and advocacy spaces, eventually studying Law and Political Science at the University of Canterbury. There, I ranked in the upper percentile of my cohort and qualified for the competitive second-year law stream. Outside the classroom, I took on leadership roles across campus—serving as a student representative for my law cohort, where I focused on addressing the needs of students and working with faculty to improve communication and equity in the law department. I was also an active member of Women in Law and Asians in Law, communities that helped shape my understanding of representation and systemic change. My academic journey later brought me to the United States through an exchange program at the University of Washington, where I completed a year of study in Political Science and History. At UW, I joined the debate team, attending several regional tournaments and winning awards. This hands-on experience helped me better understand the intersections of race, law, and democracy in the U.S, while also sharpening my voice as an advocate and collaborator. Now, as I prepare for law school in the U.S, my work is rooted in a deep commitment to social justice, democratic reform, and equitable access to legal and civic systems. I currently intern with the National Civic League, where I primarily support Civic Genius in its mission to strengthen civic engagement across the country. My work spans research, community outreach, and content development—ranging from drafting Genius Guides to creating social media content that informs and empowers everyday citizens. In addition, I support the Democracy Centre’s efforts to build the Healthy Democracy Ecosystem Map—an ambitious project cataloging over 10,500 civic organizations nationwide. My role combines qualitative research, data analysis, and a focus on amplifying voices doing essential, community-based work. With experience in legal research, civic education, and cross-cultural advocacy, I’m passionate about building systems that are inclusive, transparent, and grounded in community needs. I’m particularly drawn to the intersections of law, technology, and public policy—and how these forces can be harnessed to create more informed, just, and resilient societies. I\'m always open to connecting with others who are working to build a more collaborative civic future.
