I’m in operations”…WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN!In the first few years working in a role similar to the one I currently hold, this was my typical response when asked questions like, “What’s your title?” “Who are you?” “What do you do?”I have to admit I didn\'t like the ambiguity in the designation, and I quickly developed what I thought was an effective way to jokingly minimize the title and get it out of the way. I would always follow my standard “I’m in operations” response with an explanation that operations involved anything and everything that didn\'t fit neatly under someone else’s area of responsibility. But, the more I said it, the more I realized the truth of the statement. Consequently, the more I realized this attempt at humor most definitely began to help solidify my own understanding of who I am and what I do. Operations can indeed be one large grey area of somewhat connected (maybe somewhat disconnected, and/or maybe totally different) areas and issues to deal with. But, this is also the absolute sweet spot for an individual with a great sense of personal responsibility and ownership, who thrives on challenging learning and contextual thinking, and who has the leadership and relational skills to develop the significant partnerships and connections for successful execution no matter what the project, task, or goal. THIS IS WHO I AM. I have been blessed with opportunities, not just in my current role, but in my past positions also, to learn and experience working in so many different areas of expertise and discipline. I\'ve been able to learn what’s necessary for success from both the ground, up/hands on side as well as from the more theoretical or strategic side, and I have been able to lead from both the point where the rubber meets the road and from behind the wheel in the driver’s seat. I\'ve learned, lead, and executed. THIS IS WHAT I DO. So. I\'m in operations.
