ABOUT CLAYTON PETTY
Clayton I. Petty,(born 07••••96 in Pinehurst, North Carolina USA) graduated magna cum laude with International Honors from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2019 where he holds dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in German and Music Studies, as well as a minor in European Studies. A Lloyd International Honors Scholar, Clayton received the Anne F. Baecker Scholarship to study at the Universität Stuttgart in 2018 and was inducted to the Kappa Eta Chapter of the National German Honorary Society Delta Phi Alpha (US Nationale Deutsche Ehrenverbindung). In his final semester, UNC Greensboro\'s Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures presented him with the Undergraduate Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement & Student Excellence in German Studies. Upon graduating with his bachelors, Clayton continued his studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned his Master of Arts in Political Science in 2023 and is currently in pursuit of an additional Master of Arts degree in Sozialwissenschaften offered through a new collaboration with Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, which will be completed in early 2024. Clayton\'s research interests are centered around international environmental law, transportation policy and regulatory frameworks in the EU. Clayton’s MA thesis titled “Europe’s Diesel Detour: Corporate Influence, EU Policy and Responses to the ‘Dieselgate’ Emissions Scandal” explores the political responses, policy approaches, and revisions made to legal systems and corporate strategy in Germany as well as the greater European Union as a result of the ‘Dieselgate’ Emissions Scandal. This thesis responds to a renewed collective push for the advancement of sustainable transportation and infrastructure policy in the EU and abroad, while accentuating the long-term effects of this case on international environmental and consumer protection law.
