As Chief Commissioner of Scouts Australia, I provide national leadership for one of Australia’s largest youth development organisations, part of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), a global movement of more than 60 million members.I lead the strategic direction, governance alignment, and national cohesion of Scouting across a federated structure of State and Territory Branches. Working collaboratively with Chief Commissioners, the National Executive Committee, and senior leaders, I ensure the delivery of a contemporary, high-quality youth program grounded in the Scout Method and Scouting’s values.At an international level, I work closely with WOSM and other National Scout Organizations (NSOs), contributing to global policy, safeguarding frameworks, and youth development initiatives, while representing Australia in regional and world forums.Key responsibilities include: • Providing strategic leadership to ensure Scouting’s growth, relevance, and long-term sustainability in Australia • Strengthening governance and national consistency across a complex federated model • Leading national initiatives to enhance volunteer recruitment, retention, and experience, including innovative team-based volunteering approaches • Championing child safety and safeguarding in alignment with WOSM’s Safe from Harm framework and national standards • Advocating for the impact of Scouting with government and stakeholders, supported by evidence of improved youth resilience and wellbeing • Building strong national and international partnerships to expand opportunities for young peopleThis role requires influencing across jurisdictions, leading large-scale organisational change, and ensuring Scouting continues to deliver meaningful, values-based experiences for young Australians.

Brendan James Watson OAM is an Educational and Community Leader, Principal of Catholic Regional College Sydenham, Chief Commissioner of Scouts Australia, White Ribbon Ambassador and CEO of Catholic Regional College Institute of Training. As a passionate innovator and inspiring executive manager, he leads a faith-based learning and educational community in Melbourne’s Western Suburbs as well as Scouting across Victoria.A remarkable track record of delivering vocational education and training, coupled with VCE and VCAL, and the creation of a variety of trade-specific training facilities, Brendan has successfully delivered the highly successful Trades Training Centre. An incomparable ability to design educational spaces and learning environments meeting modern educational needs to engage students has inspired a generation of learners.His passion is fueled by a drive and energy to ensure that young people receive a positive learning experience, one that supports their chosen pathway. He draws great satisfaction from his ongoing work with young people as Chief Commissioner Scouts Victoria and previously as the International Commissioner for Scouts Australia.With a bold vision and an unwavering desire to improve the quality of learning in Australia, he seeks to reimagine schooling as we know it by creating a differentiated curriculum which is both inclusive and engaging for students. Reflecting on a 20 year history working in education Brendan has learnt that “The work of an educator is never really seen or known until years later when the stories of past students’ successes are read about or heard about. The most rewarding aspect of the role is meeting these past students and hearing from them about their life journey, where they have ended up and how the start they received at school made all the difference.”
