What can cleaning bathrooms teach you about management? More than you realize. My first supervisory position was assistant manager of a retail store. One aspect of my job was hiring and training warehouse/stock people. Since we were a small store, they were responsible for cleaning the bathrooms each night. It was not a job anyone wanted to do. I quickly realized that if I expected a certain level of \"cleanliness\" then I had to set the expectation. Not only did I clean the bathroom along with a new hire on their first night, I put myself into the rotation to clean them on a regular basis along with the rest of the team. The lesson is not simply to lead by example, but make sure you fully understand the task that you are assigning. Set a clear level of expectation and support the process so that there are no surprises at the end of the day. Not every assignment is coveted. Try to look at everything from multiple perspectives and understand that sometimes, no amount of cheerleading or encouragement can make cleaning a toilet sound like a fun job. In the end, it is understanding that a true team approach will get you through the tougher days. I try to take that same mindset into my work and personal life each day; whether I am meeting with a valued customer, interacting with one of our great sales agencies or enjoying a round of golf with family or friends.
