WORK HISTORY

Jan 2014 — Present

Director of Energy Lab @Perkins&Will

The Perkins and Will Energy Lab provides technical leadership and R+D for high-performance buildings design strategies, building thermal simulation (energy, daylighting, airflow, etc.), and computational, parametric design methodologies. As Director, I provide technical analysis and design input into a wide variety of high-performance building projects and the development of innovative design and analysis methods for the next generation of architects working towards the goal of zero emission buildings. Additional responsibilities include the development and implementation of (1) internal and external business/marketing strategies;(2) industry and academic partnerships;(3) firm-wide L&D for building performance analysis; and (4) management of all Energy Lab projects, internal staff, and consultants. Over the past 6 years, my work has been focused on the development and management of a firm-wide web-based, cloud-based, energy, daylighting, and solar design and analysis platform called the Simulation Platform for Energy-Efficient Design (SPEED). ABOUT BENJAMIN WELLE

Growing sustainability concerns require a new generation of designers that practice integrated, data-driven design to deliver energy-efficient built environments with good indoor environmental quality quickly and cost-effectively. This new design paradigm begins with a sound knowledge of sustainable design principles and strategies to minimize energy consumption, maximize daylight, and improve occupant thermal comfort. This knowledge is supported by an understanding of how rapidly evolving digital methods such as building information modeling (BIM), building performance simulation, parametric modeling, computational design, cloud computing, multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO), design automation, and artificial intelligence (AI) may be used harmoniously to achieve building performance and project delivery objectives. My career and passion reside at the nexus of these disciplines.
