About Andrew Ortega

Growing up I found myself fascinated by how someone could create video games, a form of entertainment that allows the player to live vicariously as a hero or even a villain. I was captivated by how otherworldly the product felt, and how someone could even be capable of creating something like it. As years passed my love for video games only seemed to deepen and by the time I had to choose a major for my college application, I chose Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) over game design. You may be asking yourself, why would I choose CSE over game design? The answer is the knowledge that I knew awaited me as a CSE student fascinated me even more, I didn’t want to be honed into just one path available, I wanted to be able to experience it all. As time passed since childhood, I watched YouTubers who made content using their knowledge in either Computer Science or Computer Engineering to build things like embedded systems. As a CSE student, not only could I learn the means of making a game for someone to enjoy, but I could also learn how to make things like a website built for entertainment similar to YouTube, or even some form of embedded system to complete a task. The limitlessness of such knowledge drew me in and how so many things could be created for better or for worse. Now, after having been a CSE student for 4 years including the time spent at both community college and University of California, Davis, the passion I have for the capabilities possible only continues to flourish. Since the beginning of my journey, I have now built things like an encryption/decryption algorithm, a Cache, and even a small embedded system project that could detect collision on an object. Although I still have much to learn, I am eager to experience it all and am excited about what I could do in the future. I too wish to become the inspiration for someone in the future, someone who could look at something I contributed to and think to themselves, “How is this even possible?”
