ABOUT ALICIA PÉREZ-PORRO
I started my career underwater—literally. Trained as a marine biologist studying marine sponges, I learned early on that understanding nature is only part of the challenge. What truly matters is ensuring that scientific knowledge reaches the people and institutions shaping our collective future. That realization became the foundation of my work at the intersection of science, policy, and diplomacy.Today, I specialize in science for policy, scientific advice to governments, science diplomacy, and environmental diplomacy, with a strong focus on the biodiversity–climate change nexus. My work centres on strengthening science–policy interfaces (SPIs) and advancing evidence-informed policymaking, helping translate complex environmental knowledge into insights that are timely, relevant, and actionable.I collaborate with international science–policy platforms and processes such as IPBES, MedECC, and CBD, supporting efforts that inform the development and implementation of major multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs). Along the way, I have represented organizations in high-level scientific and diplomatic settings, facilitated cross-sector collaborations, and worked extensively in knowledge brokering, environmental governance, and international policy engagement.Communication remains a central part of my professional identity. I care deeply about making science accessible—whether engaging with policymakers, collaborating with researchers, or speaking to broader audiences. My background spans academic research, nonprofit leadership, and strategic international relations, giving me a multidimensional perspective on how science can drive societal change.Having lived and worked across Latin America, Spain, and the United States, I bring an international outlook and a commitment to inclusive, cooperative leadership. Ultimately, I am driven by a simple belief: science becomes transformative when it is mobilized to inform decisions, shape policy, and strengthen our collective resilience.
