Climate and Energy Manager @Heidelberg Materials

Stockholm, SE

Heidelberg Materials is one of the world’s leading building materials companies. In the Northern Europe region, we operate a fully integrated business across the value chain — producing and selling cement, aggregates, ready-mixed concrete, and precast concrete products. In my role, I focus on advancing our sustainability agenda, with a particular emphasis on energy and climate. My responsibilities include public affairs, policy analysis, strategy and compliance with EU legislation such as the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), Renewable Energy Directive, CBAM and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). Strategically, I work with key topics such as energy efficiency, sustainable fuels, grid connections and carbon dioxide removals (through bio-CCS). In addition, I lead one of the work packages within the Slite CCS project, which focuses on upgrading the electricity grid connection. Slite CCS is one of the world’s first and largest full-scale CCS projects in the cement industry. My regional focus includes the Nordics (excluding Finland) and the Baltics.

ABOUT ALBIN CARLÉN

Energy & Climate Transition | Public Affairs | Electricity Grid Regulation | Carbon Management | Internationalisation I’m a dedicated and impact-driven professional with over a decade of experience at the intersection of energy policy, climate strategy, and business development—spanning government, industry, and international collaboration. My work is rooted in enabling the energy and climate transition: from shaping and understanding policy and regulatory frameworks to leading strategic projects across the electricity system and within heavy industry. I have held senior roles in both public agencies and industry, working with EU legislation, power grid expansion, power system flexibility, bio-CCS, and the electrification of heavy industry. Currently, at Heidelberg Materials, I lead energy and climate initiatives across Northern Europe and manage key aspects of one of the world’s largest full-scale CCS projects in the cement sector. I have expertise in key EU climate and energy legislation, including the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), and the EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification (CRCF) Regulation. My work involves both policy implementation and active engagement in the legislative process, ensuring that industrial decarbonisation strategies align with evolving EU frameworks. This includes assessing regulatory impacts, advising on compliance pathways, and contributing to strategic positioning on issues such as carbon pricing, energy efficiency obligations, and carbon dioxide removals. I translate complex legislative processes into actionable strategies that support industry’s role in delivering on the EU’s climate goals. Previously, I led regulatory and infrastructure-focused assignments at the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate, managed system reform at TSO Svenska kraftnät, and facilitated global partnerships for Sweden’s smart grid sector under direct mandate from the Minister for Energy in Sweden.
