ABOUT WILLIAM FERRIS
Since leaving school I worked in a fabrication workshop producing ventilation ducting. My main role in this job was operating the CNC plasma cutter but I also learned how to use the other machinery like the guillotine, spot welder, rollers etc. I also learned from the tradesmen there how to mark off on various materials like galvanised steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Items we produced were galv ducting, stainless industrial cooker canopies, and stainless flues. I was also required to visit sites to install these items. After many years of working in security I wanted to return to working with my hands and started working as a storeman/labourer for a facades company. My duties were to organise and order tools or fixings that were needed for the job while in the stores and while labouring I organised parts or items for certain elevations on the buildings, worked inside the mast climber to assist on installing, rainscreen cladding, terracotta tiles, curtain walling and glass. I also worked along with the telehandler as his banksman and slinger when moving around the site and lifting items. After that i decided to go to college to study towards an SVQ2 in fabrication and welding which I completed in 2020 and continued to study towards an N.C. in fabrication and welding which I completed in 2021 both at Glasgow Clyde College. From there I entered a modern apprenticeship within the Malin Group studying towards an SVQ3. During my time at Malin I’ve worked on some major projects from decommissioning units for wellsafe solutions to working on structures for Hinkley point C nuclear power station. I am now currently employed at Safab Ltd and have been for over 2 years now where i am employed as a welder/fabricator working mostly with TIG process welding aluminium. We do also use MIG and work on other materials like stainless and mild steel. Our fabrication department deals with a variety of work from roofing products, louvres, window pods, truck storage boxes to any custom designs or items that our customers need. I also work as a machine operator when needed producing flashings, roof profiles ect. I am also required to fluidized powder coat dip roofing components for various jobs for our clients. As of right now i work for a great company with a great team who produce quality work in a very reliable time.
