ABOUT TOM ORTON-BEW
Most mobile PMs ship features. I do that too - but I also build the infrastructure that makes shipping faster and more confident. At The Economist, I\'ve led product and architectural decision-making across my domains: from a multi-quarter app migration from React Native to native Swift and Kotlin, to pushing for code modularisation that\'s delivered real benefits for our mobile engineers. When I arrived at The Economist, I asked why we weren\'t experimenting more systematically on the paywall. The honest answer was infrastructure. I started where I could - picking up a simple tab-order test that delivered a 50%+ increase in CLTV - and spent the next two years advocating for the capability to make that kind of result repeatable. That advocacy led to an in-house paywall editor that removes engineering dependencies from acquisition experimentation entirely, giving non-technical teams the ability to run tests without needing dev time. I was also hand-picked by the Chief Data Officer to join a 17.5-hour advanced experimentation programme, which has added real technical depth to how I think about and run experiments.I\'ve also been one of The Economist\'s AI Champions for my pillar: advocating for Copilot to be adopted across my engineering team, contributing to learning frameworks, and running adoption programmes within Product. My view from the inside: productivity gains are real, but they\'re fully unlocked by infrastructure and governance - not by the tool alone.5+ years delivering on iOS and Android at scale. Targeting Senior PM and Technical PM roles in mobile platform, AI enablement, or consumer fintech.
