I lead sustainability across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Police which covers miles, from major cities to the Peak District, helping both forces navigate the practical realities and benefits of decarbonisation. Originally recruited by Nottinghamshire Police, I was later asked to establish and head up a joint sustainability unit between the two forces as a result of the positive impact made so far.I use sustainability as a driver of operational improvement. From shaping our environmental strategy and delivering energy audits to decarbonising two police fleets. I lead on everything from unlocking significant savings through innovation to embedding the cultural changes needed to make sustainability part of how we work every day. My role is evidencing through action that sustainability will save the force money, meaning more budget is available for front line policing. My work includes:• Leading the shaping and delivery of organisational sustainability strategy, driving long term environmental plans and Net Zero pathways. • Directing energy audits, and estate wide carbon reduction initiatives backed by implementing Environmental Management Systems (EMS).• Carbon footprint benchmarking, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reporting and impact studies ensuring audit compliance.• Fleet decarbonisation, including EV and infrastructure planning and development.• Delivering innovative sustainability solutions to enable cost savings – such as piloting UK first waste disposal options.• Culture shift through training, engagement and behavioural change programmes. • Advising senior leaders, boards and cross functional teams. • Supporting our expert procurement team to deliver first class sustainable procurement.• Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA)• Oversee environmental performance reporting and ensure compliance with relevant policies, standards and legislation – such as drafting targets to align with SBTI best practice. • Undertaking climate risk assessments
ABOUT TOM M
I push sustainability as a driver of operational improvement, above basic compliance. Over my career I\'ve contributed to work that has saved hundreds of millions of pounds, cut carbon and waste in half at scale, and shaped sustainability strategy at government and large organisation levels. Currently, I head up a joint sustainability unit across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Police, a role I was invited to create after the impact I made at Nottinghamshire alone. Across two forces covering roughly square miles, I lead everything from Net Zero pathways and GHG reporting to fleet decarbonisation, estate-wide energy audits, and pioneering waste disposal innovations (including a UK first). Before this, I spent years at the centre of government sustainability, including as a Senior Policy Advisor at DEFRA and Strategy Lead at the Home Office. Advising on policy, cross-departmental strategy, and national-level environmental programmes to ministers and senior leaders with priorities far beyond sustainability. My approach is the same wherever I work: shift the culture, and deliver measurable results in terms of impact but also finances.
