ABOUT TOM BAYCOCK

I am an award-winning lecturer in law at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campus. I teach criminal law and environmental law, working with students across all three years of study and from a variety of disciplines, ranging from our law students enrolled on our law with business programme, through to politics, geography, environmental sciences and biosciences students, who have opted to undertake the study of some law modules as part of their programme. I am the module convenor for our first year environmental law module - Legal Foundations for Environmental Protection. Besides my immediate teaching responsibilities, my academic work also includes responsibility for Mooting, where I am Co-Director of our internal mooting opportunities. I also act as Academic Lead for Student Recruitment for the Law School in Cornwall. In this role I support recruitment to the law with business programme via Open Days and school visits. I am also the Employability Officer for HaSS Cornwall, where I convene the short placement modules for politics, history, and environmental humanities students, and also support students in finding internships, placements, and future careers.In terms of research, I am working on a project funded by the Association of Law Teachers titled: ‘Revaluing Nature’: Using bi-cultural law and craftivism in transformative environmental law learning’. I am also continuing with my doctoral research on biodiversity and conservation laws. My research interests include conservation and wildlife laws, ecocide and environmental crime, legal personhood and rights of nature, law of the sea, polar law, and areas beyond national jurisdiction. I have also presented papers to conferences in the UK and abroad, most recently presenting at the Conceptualising Ecocide Conference’ at Utrecht University in the Netherlands in October, the ‘Navigating the North: Perspectives on Sustainable Development in the Arctic’ conference at the University of Inland Norway in Lillehammer, Norway, in August, and the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law conference in Rabat, Morocco, in May. I am an active member of Exeter Centre for Environmental Law (ExCEL) and sit as a member of the Steering Committee for Exeter Marine.
